What Is ICOCA?
ICOCA is a rechargeable smart card for public transportation in western Japan, mainly used in Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe, and the surrounding Kansai region. It’s issued by JR West and works like Tokyo’s Suica or PASMO.

Why Tourists Need a Physical ICOCA Card
While Japanese phones can use Mobile ICOCA, many overseas smartphones (especially Android models) don’t support the FeliCa technology required.

Where to Buy an ICOCA Card
You can purchase an ICOCA card at JR West station ticket machines (with English support), ticket counters such as “Midori no Madoguchi,” or at the JR station in Kansai International Airport. The card costs 2,000 yen, which includes a 500 yen deposit and 1,500 yen available balance.
ICOCAカードは、JR西日本の駅にある券売機（英語対応あり）、「みどりの窓口」といったJRの窓口、または関西空港のJR駅で購入できます。価格は2,000円で、500円のデポジットと1,500円分のチャージ残高が含まれています。
ICOCA is incredibly convenient beyond just trains and buses—it also works at most convenience stores like 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart, as well as many vending machines, shops, and tourist attractions. With ICOCA, you won’t need to carry coins or small cash.
ICOCAは交通機関だけでなく、セブンイレブン・ローソン・ファミリーマートなどのほとんどのコンビニ、自販機、観光地のお店でも利用できるため、とても便利です。小銭や細かい現金を持ち歩く必要がありません。
However, be careful not to lose your card. ICOCA is not registered to individuals unless you apply for a personalized version, so if it’s lost, any remaining balance cannot be recovered. To reduce risk, it’s best to only charge what you need for a few days at a time.
ただし、紛失には注意が必要です。ICOCAは記名式でない限り個人情報と紐づいていないため、紛失すると残高を取り戻すことはできません。数日分の必要な金額だけをチャージするのが安全です。
